Today’s citizens face a challenging economic future. Yet the sad truth is that the average family does little or nothing to help prepare them for the financial “real world.” Some organizations do offer some financial literacy resources, but very few or students reap their benefits. Financial illiteracy has reached epidemic proportions in our country, and causes major problems at both the community and national levels. Financial issues are the leading cause of a college dropout, debt issues and its associated stress often has a devastating emotional impact. This epidemic hurts not only individuals, but the community as a whole. The NFEC’s Certified Financial Education Instructors offer a partial solution. They raise awareness about financial literacy, support organizations broader objective and empower today’s youth with practical money skills.

The financial literacy presentations feature activities that engage students in the learning process. Hands-on and project-based learning activities increase retention rates and make the process more enjoyable for kids and teachers alike. The lesson plans focus on creating the positive financial habits and relationships with money that will serve the participants now and as they mature. The lesson plans are designed in a modular format to accommodate a variety of schedules. The material can be presented as a camp, after-school program, in-class training, and various other delivery schedules. The lesson plans bridge the gap between practical application and theory-based education. During these practical activities, students complete exercises that will improve their financial capabilities. It covers 10 personal finance topic areas: Budgeting, Credit/Debit, Financial Psychology, Skill Development, Income, Risk Management, Social Enterprise, Investments, and Long-Term Planning. Although these topics may sound advanced for kids, the hands-on format makes all the lessons fun for the whole class.
